Goldey-Beacom College recognizes that effective leadership requires a range of skills and a breadth of knowledge from a variety of disciplines. Therefore, the curriculum has two major components aimed at developing the full human and professional capabilities of the individual. These components are the concentration or major, and the liberal arts component.

Students may select a major or concentration of courses which provides specialization and builds particular competencies. Each degree curriculum provides a balance of general education and major/related courses. All undergraduate degrees are designed to meet a standard set of general education program goals, in addition to maintaining their own program-specific goals.

The Major Component

Each program of study at Goldey-Beacom College is fashioned around a common academic core of coursework designed to prepare the student for their chosen field (e.g. psychology, business, economics). All programs are carefully designed to give students an ideal mix of practical skills and in-depth theoretical understanding of the subject matter.

The Liberal Arts/General Education Component

The liberal arts/general education component is designed to provide students with the broader context of human, social, and economic perspectives which complement the content of business studies. Successful business leaders understand the implications their decisions have on themselves, their families, their communities, and their working environment. These decisions involve ethnical judgment, clear and analytical thinking, a sense of social responsibility, an understanding of people, and a notion of justice. Goldey-Beacom College’s liberal arts/general education curriculum seeks to help students realize that business leadership is more than the mastery of a series of skills. It is the understanding of a complex social environment. Therefore, the course in humanities, social sciences, mathematics, and communications foster:

• A faculty for critical and analytical thinking.
• A facility for quantitative analysis.
• An appreciation of our cultural and intellectual heritage.
• An international perspective.
• A moral and ethical awareness.
• A capacity for excellence in written and oral communications.
• An understanding of self and society

General Education Curriculum

Goldey-Beacom College’s general education curriculum is designed to provide students with the broader context of global, social, historical, and economic perspectives which complement the content knowledge of major studies. All bachelor’s degree programs follow the “60/40 rule” common in higher education that requires a balance of general education and major/related courses. Between 40 and 60 percent of any given bachelor degree program consists of general education courses, with the remaining 40 to 60 percent of the program consisting of major/related courses. The general education core broadens students’ horizons, enabling them to understand the implications their decisions have on themselves, their families, communities, and their working environment. These decisions involve ethical judgement, clear and analytical thinking, a sense of social responsibility, an understanding of people, and a notion of justice.

Courses in humanities, mathematics, technology, social sciences, and communication nurture and cultivate the following skills and capacities in our students:

• Competence in writing for specific purposes, audiences, and genres
• Demonstrated ability to conduct college-level research
• Proficiency in using contemporary technologies for communication
• Effective oral and interpersonal communication skills
• Competence in mathematics and mathematical software applications
• Awareness and sensitivity to interpersonal and cultural relations
• High standards of professional, ethical, and academic behavior

Undergraduate General Education Program Goals

Upon successful completion of the Bachelor’s degree in all programs within the College, students will:

Business Studies Mission Statement

The Mission of the Business Unit at Goldey-Beacom College is to provide students a relevant and rigorous business education on both the graduate and undergraduate level. Studies will equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge to obtain and excel in business careers through 1) a foundation understanding of all areas of business, 2) expertise in a focused area of business, and 3) an understanding of ethical practices in today’s diverse and global business environment. The business studies provided by this unit, when coupled with the College’s rich general education offerings, will produce well-rounded graduates valued by employers, capable of further advanced studies if desired, and recognized for mastery in their field.

Goals of the Business Unit at Goldey-Beacom College

1. A broad based knowledge of the functional areas of business, including accounting, marketing, finance, and management
2. Evident expertise in a chosen business area or concentration
3. Research capabilities within the chosen business area or concentration, if selected
4. Leadership skills needed to manage organizations that include communications, problem-solving, and utilization of technology taught within an ethical context
