Vision

In the twenty-first century, Goldey-Beacom College will be a leading regional institution of higher education, offering high quality programs in a nurturing atmosphere where quality is always dictated by the needs of our principal consumer - the student, and where consumer satisfaction is pursued by all as the paramount goal.

In realization of this vision, and as a foremost measure of quality, the College will attract and retain a dedicated, professional staff, as well as credentialed faculty recognized for expertise in their field and who excel in the art of teaching, student mentoring, endeavors of scholarship, research, and service. Built on this firm foundation of scholarship, service, and support, the institution will seek and maintain appropriate and prestigious national accreditations.

In its second century, Goldey-Beacom College reaffirms its commitment to the proud tradition of providing accessible, high quality, career-focused education. An independent, multilevel college, Goldey-Beacom College offers challenging undergraduate and graduate programs. As a teaching-oriented institution of higher learning, the College emphasizes instructional excellence in the classroom and is committed to sustaining faculty who are caring, dedicated and knowledgeable in their respective fields; who motivate their students to realize their full learning potential; and, above all, who represent teaching excellence. Goldey-Beacom College is further committed to providing a caring, wholesome, intellectually stimulating learning environment to its students so that they may grow as individuals and become worthy, productive members of society.

Goals

The goals of Goldey-Beacom College are as follows:

  1. To provide students with a broad general education consisting of communications, mathematics, humanities, and social sciences so that they may develop an informed understanding of the society in which they live.
  2. To provide students with an in-depth preparation in their major field of study in order to facilitate their successful entry into a career or advanced education, including active assistance in the job search and placement process.
  3. To help make the College accessible to all academically qualified students through financial aid, flexible scheduling, and the use of technology.
  4. To maintain up-to-date curricula which are responsive to the current and future needs of students.
  5. To attract, hire, and retain competent faculty who are masterful in the art of teaching.
  6. To provide faculty with on-going opportunities for professional growth and advancement in their area(s) of teaching responsibility in order to further enhance knowledge and teaching excellence for the benefit of students.
  7. To assure technology literacy in all students by providing interaction with up-to-date computer equipment and software and by integrating technology throughout the curricula.
  8. To provide students with a learning environment which is caring and supportive yet challenging and rigorous.
  9. To provide academic integrity by creating an environment that fosters ethical values and honest behavior.
  10. To continually assess and refine programs and services to assure high student satisfaction.

Goldey-Beacom College offers all classes solely only on-campus. It should be noted, however, that the following new degree offerings were introduced after ACBSP recognition was conferred and are not yet accredited by ACBSP, but will be submitted for approval at the earliest opportunity:

  • Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, concentration in Entrepreneurial Studies
  • MBA with concentration in Entrepreneurial Studies
  • Doctor of Business Administration

  • Middle States Commission on Higher Education
    Goldey-Beacom College is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, 3624 Market Street, Philadelphia, PA 19104, 267-284-5000. The Commission on Higher Education is an institutional accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.   • Delaware Department of Education
    The College is approved by the Delaware Department of Education for general collegiate purposes. The College is authorized to award associate, baccalaureate, graduate, and doctoral degrees. 
  • U.S. Department of Education
    Goldey-Beacom College is listed in the Directory of Postsecondary Institutions published by the United States Department of Education. The College is recognized as an institution of higher learning and is approved to participate in the Federal Student Financial Aid Programs. 
  • U.S. Veterans Administration
    The certificate, associate, baccalaureate, and graduate degree curricula are approved for the education of veterans under the new Public Law 89-358. The College complies with the laws and the requirements of various Veterans Administration regulations.
  • Rehabilitation Training
    Goldey-Beacom College is approved by the rehabilitation divisions of the State Departments of Public Instruction in Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, and Virginia. The College is in compliance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 in that program accessibility has been achieved for handicapped students.
  • Federal Government Approval on Foreign Students
    This school is authorized under Federal law to enroll nonimmigrant alien students.

History

There is something very special about this small school. It has graduated four governors, corporate presidents across the nation, and professionals in every walk of life. Among its alumni are doctors, lawyers, and entrepreneurs who first chose this small school to start their education.

The College traces its origins to September 1, 1886, when business educator H.S. Goldey opened the Wilmington Commercial College with only five students. In 1900, one of Goldey’s best instructors, W.H. Beacom, parted ways, opening his own school only blocks away. By 1929, the re-named Beacom College had an enrollment over 1000, and for four decades the two engaged in fierce competition. In 1951, the two entities merged, giving rise to today’s Goldey-Beacom College. In 1974, the College relocated from its landlocked downtown Wilmington location to the present suburban Pike Creek campus.

The College was first accredited by the Middle States Association in 1976, and has offered baccalaureate degrees since 1978. In 1992, Goldey-Beacom established its first MBA program, which today thrives with over 1000 students. In 1997-98, the College completed the rigorous self-study process for the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP), and in the following year, attained accreditation by the International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education (IACBE). In 2006, the College was again granted the full ten-year accreditation by each of the organizations. In 2009 the College announced the introduction of baccalaureate programs in economics and psychology, expanding on their long history of excellence in business education. In 2011, two new baccalaureate programs in Criminal Justice and English further enhanced the College’s offerings.

Today, Goldey-Beacom College offers undergraduate degrees in psychology, criminal justice, English, economics, and all areas of business. The MBA degree is offered with numerous concentrations, along with the Masters in Management, MS in Finance and the MS in Taxation degree. Over 2,000 students are enrolled for academic credit at the College.

What has never changed at Goldey-Beacom College since 1886 is a commitment to quality - in its faculty, in its programs, and in its students.
