Warning Signs of Domestic Violence and Abuse

Physical injury is usually the most common abusive behavior to recognize. However, it is important to have an understanding of and observe other warning signs of an abusive relationship.  Below is a list of common warning signs. 

1. Checking cell phones, emails or social networks without permission
2. Extreme jealousy or insecurity
3. Constant belittling or put-downs
4. Explosive temper
5. Isolation from family and friends
6.  Making false accusations
7.  Erratic mood swings
8. Physically inflicting pain or hurt in any way
9. Possessiveness
10. Telling someone what to do
11. Repeatedly pressuring someone to have sex

It is always important for individuals who witness or suspect that someone they know is a victim of an abusive relationship to speak up and take action.

1. Get assistance by contacting the Title IX Coordinator for information on nearby counseling centers.
2. Consider contacting Campus Security and/or the Title IX Coordinator.
3. Consider contacting the Delaware State Police and receive assistance with obtaining a protection order.
4. Trust your instincts; if something does not feel right, speak up or take action.
